Anuradhapura is a city located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. Its prominence reached its zenith back in the fourth century BC when the great King Pandukabhaya made it his capital. The glorious spaces of Anuradhapura were lavishly adorned with the grandiosity of tall buildings, statues, and dome-shaped shrines.
Most of these impressive constructions stand to this day, having braved the winds of many centuries. Together, the kings of Anuradhapura were able to create one of the most complex systems of irrigation in the world at that time.
One of the most remarkable events that occurred during the Anuradhapura Kingdom was the introduction of Buddhism to the island. According to the epic poem Mahavamsa, Thera Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka of India, visited Sri Lanka on the full moon day in the month of June; here he met King Devanampiyatissa, who reigned on the island at that time. This fateful encounter resulted in the king, and subsequently the country, embracing the peaceful teachings of Lord Buddha.
Out of all dagobas in Anuradhapura, this is the most iconic. It was built by King Dutugamunu in 140 BC and is said to contain the biggest collection of Buddha’s relics.
This mega structure dating back to 2nd the century BC is another stupa containing relics of Buddha. Its monastic complex was the original custodian of the Tooth Relic.
It was from the summit of this rock, Arahat Mahinda preached the first words of Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa, who converted to Buddhism then and there.
It was the third tallest monument in the world. Built by King Mahasen, this massive dome consisted of 90 million bricks. Ruins of a sprawling monastery surround it.
This 3rd century BC dagoba is the oldest in Sri Lanka and was built by King Devanampiyatissa to enshrine the right collarbone of Buddha. Its most unique feature is the Vatadage.
It is the oldest surviving human-planted tree in the world. It was a sapling from the original tree in India. under which Buddha said to have attained enlightenment.
